This is a long exposure of the Serendipity, better known as ”Nights in Rodanthe house”, before it was moved a couple years ago. I was on my way to Buxton for the night and stopped to shoot a few images at Mirlo Beach because the full moon was so bright. The surf was pumping and I remember mindsurfing these amazing waves while I was shooting the long exposures. It was kinda late in the evening and during the offseason so it was eerily calm and quiet…zero humans anywhere. I’d taken a few photos without any vehicles passing during the exposure and they came out OK. Then a couple DOT trucks showed up to work on the dune at S Turns and passed during one of the exposures. I liked the image much better with the streaks of light from the trucks because it added warmth and color, so I waited to start the next few exposures when the DOT trucks were driving past. Here is one of the frames. Good thing they moved the house cause Irene would’ve swept it away.

Recently landed page 1 of Local Sessions Magazine. It’s an image of Lucas Rogers doing a big air at Hayman a few years ago. Stoked it finally found a good home. Congrats Lucas on the cover and thanks Local Sessions for the primo real estate.

Another one from the archives. Shot this in 2009. Super calm morning. Drove around looking for interesting things to shoot with the sound being so glassy. Ended up at this old home in Nags Head known as the Stinsons Ranch. Such a cool little house built many many years ago. I believe it was built in the late 60s or early 70s. Maybe the only house built over water in the Outer Banks? Here is an Our State Magazine article on the home: http://www.ourstate.com/stinsons-ranch/. Little did I know 2 years later a hurricane would come through and completely demolish the house leaving only a few pilings and a staircase. So sad. Below my photo is a moving image of the owners of the home after Irene devastated the Outer Banks and destroyed their home. (I did not shoot the 2nd photo, I found it online.) If anyone knows the Stinsons please have them contact me and I’d be more than happy to give them a print of their beautiful home before the storm. Happy to hear they are rebuilding it.

Here are a few photos from a recent engagement session with Jen & Branden. We knew it was risky planning an engagement session in mid February but since they were coming from out of town for the weekend to meet with vendors we decided to fit it in while they were here. This winter has been mild, especially compared to the last few winters. Unfortunately though, the weekend they came down a low pressure system moved through and we had gusty 20-30 mph winds, freezing temps, and light rain. Sunday didn’t look any better as the wind was forecasted to blow 30-40+ mph, so we charged it Saturday afternoon in the arctic conditions. Despite the ugly weather we made the best of it and still had a great time. Engagement sessions are so fun, even in winter storms. Looking forward to their wedding in Corolla later this year.
Frothy one from Avon a while back. One of the first days I shot fisheye.

Been putting some of my favorite surfing images together for an upcoming ‘Behind the Glass’ portfolio feature on EasternSurf.com. Fun looking back at all the old photos and good memories. Don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied with my portfolio but hopefully everyone enjoys it. Will post link when its up.
Mixing it up on ya. Here’s a video clip I found on my hard drive from a swim I had off Nags Head last year. Big school of Menhaden close to the Huron wreck. Must’ve been a million of them. But they move and swim like one. So much fish poop. Pretty sure this was the same day my brother and I had a 12-15 ft whale swim around us for a few minutes. So many days of clear water last year. Fun times. Added a tune from Mogwai. I like, but there’s very good chance you will not like the song. Sorry. Unfortunately youtube ruined the quality of the video, but increase quality to 480 and it helps some.
