Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournmanent

Photographed the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament all last week and had a blast. Taking photos of beautiful sportfishing boats, fishing weigh ins, and people having tons of fun is what I love to do. The event was a success and I met some wonderful people. Here’s a few moments from the week. Click here to view many more. And here to purchase prints. Aerial gallery will be posted soon.

Pirate’s Cove Tourney Day 3

Here’s one of the images I took yesterday of the boats coming back in to pirate’s cove marina flying their marlin flags. I had my camera in my waterhousing and paddled out on my paddleboard for this perspective. The anglers had a great day catching over 70 marlin.

Heli Sportfishing Boat Shoot

I might enjoy photographing boats more than surfing, esp when I’m shooting them from a helicopter with the door off 30 feet above the ocean going 40 miles per hour at sunrise.

Pirate’s Cove

Shooting the 28th Annual Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament this week. The marina is so photogenic…here’s one I got this evening. Fishing starts tomorrow so hopefully I’ll have photos of some huge marlin later in the week. Check back.

Common Dolphins

Fun times swimming with common dolphins 70 miles offshore today. It was like a lake out there and visibility must’ve been at least 100 ft. Lost a white marlin and a mystery fish. We’ll get ‘em next time.

3 for 5

Went offshore yesterday with Drew and Mike Meredith. Caught 3 white marlin out of 5 seen in the spread. Was a great day on the water. Hopped in for a few photos. Pretty stoked on a couple of them.

Citation White Marlin

Went offshore fishing on Monday with my dad and brother out of Virginia Beach. We were hoping to catch some yellowfin tuna and dolphin. We drove out about 70 miles offshore to the Norfolk Canyon. Caught a few dolphin in the morning and were starting to troll our way back towards home when a really nice white marlin swam into our spread and hit the flatline. After we hooked up on him he went crazy, jumping out of the water about 5 times trying to spit the bait. He ran so hard he almost spooled our reel and I jumped up to the wheel and drove the boat towards the fish to gain some line back. My brother fought him for 40 minutes and we landed it. It was our first marlin. We actually thought it was a small blue marlin and later confirmed it was a citation white. A beautiful day on the water and a memory we’ll never forget.

Offshore Fishing Yesterday

Went offshore yesterday hoping to catch some yellowfin or bigeye tuna. We ended up on a completely different program, catching gaffer dolphin and targeting white marlin most of the day. We raised up 5 or 6 and hooked into 4 marlin. Couldn’t get any to the boat, but it was a really exciting anyway. I’ve never fished for marlin or had any encounters with them so it was really cool seeing how they come up and investigate your spread and then if your good enough to gett’em hooked they go nuts jumping out of the water trying to throw the hook. Caught 3 gaffer dolphin on some grass early in the morning then got a really nice wham of gaffers early afternoon…biggest one about 30 lbs. I didn’t get any photos because I was fighting the biggest one of the day (not complaining!). Thanks Drew for snappin couple pix of me fighting the biggn. Conditions were about as good as it gets with light and variable winds, water as blue as it gets, and a glassy ocean for most of the day. Another fun day on the Blue Runner. That mahi tasted oh soo good in fish tacos last night!
