Had a great day bluefin tuna fishing yesterday. Couldn’t have asked for better weather and conditions…calm seas and around 70 degree air temp. Arms and face are sunburned today..not bad for February! Went about 30 miles off hatteras. Hooked up one big fish trolling in the morning but unfortunately it pulled off (heartbreak!!). It was estimated to be about 250-300 + lbs. We didn’t get another troll bite for a couple hours and noticed a bunch of the boats around us were using a jigging technique. Jigging for these massive, extremely powerful fish requires a specific rod and reel, which we didn’t have. Drew had this crazy idea of using a spinning rod typically used to catch rockfish (way lighter than tuna we were going for). We tied a much stronger rod and reel to the spinning rod so that we could potentially throw the spinning rod in the water after getting hooked up and fight the fish with the stronger rod. I know, it sounds crazy. There were bets on the boat that the spinning rod and/or reel would break if we actually hooked up on a tuna and it would never work. We were getting some of the most incredible marks on the depth finder….a hundred feet thick marks of tuna which equates to potentially hundreds of bluefin tuna schools. I was pretty bummed I didn’t have my water housing to jump in and film/photograph the tuna underwater. Anyway, soon as we saw a huge mark we stopped and Drew started jigging the lure using the lightweight spinning rod. Within 15 seconds he hooked up. We all couldn’t believe it… his jigging actually worked without having a jigging rod. After an intense 20-30 minute fight we landed the 100+ pound tuna without even switching to the stronger rod/reel. I highly doubt anyone has ever caught a fish of that size on the rod and reel we used. Drews idea worked after all! When we came up on the next mark we tried the jigging technique again and hooked up on a much bigger fish. Unfortunately this time the fish spooled the spinning rod within seconds and there was no chance at stopping this tunas run. I guess our luck had ran out. We headed back home. Cruised by the diamond shoals tower on the way. All in all it was a great day and can’t wait to get back out on the open ocean again. Nothing like it. I brought my camera gear and spent most of the time filming the trip but I did grab a few photos along the way. Will be putting together a little video of the trip at some point.

Brett Barley and I scored the cover of the newest Local Sessions Magazine (Feb/March Issue). We nailed this shot in Mexico last summer. Stoked to get Brett his first cover (finally!). Hopefully get him another one soon. The mag also features a ‘Behind the Lens’ interview with me. Pick up the mag at your local surf shop.

It’s been a brutal winter. Yes, we did get snow the other day and I really enjoyed playing in the powder taking photos for a couple hours, but I’m ready for spring. The combination of little to no surf and wet, cold weather over the last month or two has been pretty tough. I packed my bags to escape to Central America 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately I had some things come up so I couldn’t go, but my bags are still packed. im rambling here. Anyway, Thursday I was excited about the chance for a small clean knee high wave on Friday morning, which is kinda sad but anyway. Hadn’t checked the forecasts much cause I knew there wasnt anything significant in the forecast…just the possibility of catching some small windswell leftovers with offshore winds first thing. Woke up grabbed a cup a joe, threw suit gloves booties and longboard in the truck and headed over to the beach. sun was out, beautiful day…much nicer than the previous 2 days. surf-wise no expectations really…just hoping to get a few knee high peelers. couldnt believe my eyes at first glance. beautiful emerald green waist to stomach high with flawless shape. such a pleasant surprise. had that look to it where down south could be pretty darn fun. immediately hopped the bridge. sure enough i was greeted with perfect waist to shoulder high peaky surf and 2 guys out. with little to no expectations this was one of the funnest days of surf I’ve seen in months. It wasn’t epic by any means, but conditions were great and it was a gorgeous day. was also the first time i photographed surf with my new camera. very happy with the restults and cant wait for the next solid swell. march has been good to us in the past so my fingers are crossed. gonna try not to obsess over surf forecast though. Below are a handful of photos from yesterday’s pleasant surprise over the bridge.

Woke up to a winter snow storm this morning. Well I actually woke up to my wifes phone ringing because school was cancelled (shes a teacher). Immediately jumped out of bed, grabbed my cameras, and hopped in the truck. Enjoyed cruising around shooting snowy landscapes while the snow was still falling and everyone was still in bed this morning. I’ve uploaded some to my online print store, which is right here : http://www.mattluskphoto.com/Print-Galleries Hope you enjoy. Still waiting for surf..
